It wasn’t until 1919 however that the first motorised public transport to the area was made available, when a Captain Napper established a service carrying passengers from the area bounded by Dromana and Rosebud to the rail terminus at Mornington, and through to Melbourne on the weekends. Peninsula Bus Lines became a public company in the mid 1950’s. During the 1960’s the situation gradually improved - route services and school bus operations expanded and charters became a significant revenue source. Peninsula Bus Lines Ltd was subject to a number of takeover offers in the early 1970’s. In 1976 the entire bus operations were purchased by the Grenda Group. To this day the Company still trades as “Peninsula Bus Lines”. The current depot at Seaford was completed in 1977 and heavy-duty vehicles were purchased. Since then the company has continued to expand spread over the Seaford depot and a new one in Hastings, opened in 2007). Route services operate throughout Frankston and out as far as Carrum, Mornington / Mt Martha, Skye, Langwarrin, Baxter / Pearcedale and Hastings / Flinders. Recent changes to timetabling have seen a considerable increase in the frequency of services, especially in the evening and over the weekend. Contracts are maintained with many primary and secondary schools in the area, as well as the Frankston campus of Monash University and the Baxter Retirement Village. The period of time since 1922, therefore, has seen Peninsula Bus Lines evolve from a small transport business into an integral part of the social and business community on the Mornington Peninsula, offering services to the public, schools and charter groups on and around the Peninsula.
